CHAMP SHOW. 28.9.08 FROM MRS ANN ARCH It was a pleasure to have such happy & relaxed exhibits in most of the classes. At this time of year, its obvious that quite a few of the bitches are suffering hormonal feelings due to imminent seasons. With these, I would not dream to force them in anyway, as one unpleasant show ring experience will never be forgotten. From an outsiders view, I offer a few comments/observations, which I hope will be accepted in a constructive manner. When judging or breeding, an exhibit should present a picture of a fit worker. The late Violet Yates, often quoted “an army marches on its feet” and in breeds that are expected to work endlessly, day after day, then serviceable feet are paramount. With our recent wet summer, I realise that the ground on which many dogs run, has been very soft, & so encourages the feet to spread in order to get a grip. Roadwork, on hard surfaces, is the solution! Another contributory factor to a fit worker is good muscle & in several at the show, their muscular hind legs were really commendable. Having been associated with working *pastoral) breeds since the early 1960s, I am very conscious of the need to have good shoulders, if they are to move tirelessly, and with little effort. A poor shoulder with little angulation, and/or upright or short upper arms, will bring about the need to take lots more steps, which are ultimately tiring. With balanced angulations at both ends of the body, this ensures ease of action with a well held top line. There were a few heads which were inclined towards Border Collie, but on the whole, most were typical. One very notable point since I last judged the breed were variations in croup. Your standard calls for it to be rather long & sloping, where as more than a few were lacking croup, with tails stuck on the end of the body. This was coupled to tails being carried far too high – in the manner of flagpoles! I have already noted (in my main critique) a black body patch, but when one judges, in my opinion, the animal should be capable of working. Another Violet Yates saying was “a good horse I any colour”. I am not saying that breeds should carry great variety of colourings, but a small deviation has to e considered versus wrong construction …………… Jacket textures were really very good, especially in a summer that has been so varied for climate. I was also pleased that you don’t subject your Aussies to a variety of oils, coat sprays etc. At the end of the day, my hands were really quite clean. From a construction angle, I found one hock which sub-luxated (double jointed) and another that though OK to examine, on moving away gave the little “hop” that suggests patella luxation. Good luck with the future of your lovely breed! Ann Arch. My thanks for a very good entry, in a spacious venue, which allowed all exhibits to really get moving. Two super stewards ensured that the day’s proceedings went well, and this was aided in no small measure by the handlers, who accepted all decisions with grace. Best in Show went to the dog, who encompasses the Breed Standard in no small way. CURDELEON BLUE THE BOY WUNDA had all that I was looking for in a true worker. Ultra sound, balanced overall, in lovely firm body condition & muscle. Clear eyes and correct feet. He put up a copy book performance which was well applauded. Reserve Best in Show was the Res.CC dog AUSTMANS CALEDONIAN CHAOS . Another who typified a real worker. Best Opposite Sex was AUSTMANS SALLY CARERRA, a truly admirable bitch, no so long off her litter, so a little lacking in undercarriage! Despite this, her good type, balance & soundness carried her. Best Puppy in Show was AUSTMANS COR BLIMEY at 10months shows great promise for the future. Best Opp.Sex Puppy was AUSTMANS GEE WHIZZ AT TIBORKIE. Best Veteran was the BIS winner. Bes Opp.Sex Veteran RANPURA BELLBIRD ECHO.

well. Taking heed of the breed standard, noted he has a solid black patch at the rear, but construction is the priority on a working dog and his overall soundness & type can’t be denied.
Open Dog. 5 (1 abs) 1. Res.CC. AUSTMANS CALEDONIA CHAOS. Pleasing type & balance, with called for proportions. Good head, eye & excellent pigmentation. Strong neck, super shoulder proportions, good feet. Firm body with excellent loin. Sound, well formed rear. Moved with great ease & soundness. 2. AUSTMANS REAL RIOT. See is sire of class winner, so no doubt as to why they took these placings! My notes state “close up to winner”. Nicely headed, good forehand. Can come up a little on feet. Very sound rear. Pleasing jacket texture. Moved easily & well. 3. WARRIGAL BLUE SWAGMAN AT CURDELEON. Good head & expression, strong neck, good forehand and feet. Well developed ribbing. Sound rear with strong stifle. Is just a little longer cast in body. Moved easily & well. Veteran Bitch 4 (2abs)
