CHAMP SHOW. 28.9.08

FROM MRS ANN ARCH

It was a pleasure to have such happy & relaxed exhibits in most of the classes. At this time of year, its obvious that quite a few of the bitches are suffering hormonal feelings due to imminent seasons. With these, I would not dream to force them in anyway, as one unpleasant show ring experience will never be forgotten.

From an outsiders view, I offer a few comments/observations, which I hope will be accepted in a constructive manner.

When judging or breeding, an exhibit should present a picture of a fit worker. The late Violet Yates, often quoted “an army marches on its feet” and in breeds that are expected to work endlessly, day after day, then serviceable feet are paramount. With our recent wet summer, I realise that the ground on which many dogs run, has been very soft, & so encourages the feet to spread in order to get a grip. Roadwork, on hard surfaces, is the solution! Another contributory factor to a fit worker is good muscle & in several at the show, their muscular hind legs were really commendable.

Having been associated with working *pastoral) breeds since the early 1960s, I am very conscious of the need to have good shoulders, if they are to move tirelessly, and with little effort. A poor shoulder with little angulation, and/or upright or short upper arms, will bring about the need to take lots more steps, which are ultimately tiring. With balanced angulations at both ends of the body, this ensures ease of action with a well held top line.

There were a few heads which were inclined towards Border Collie, but on the whole, most were typical.

One very notable point since I last judged the breed were variations in croup. Your standard calls for it to be rather long & sloping, where as more than a few were lacking croup, with tails stuck on the end of the body.  This was coupled to tails being carried far too high – in the manner of flagpoles!

I have already noted (in my main critique) a black body patch, but when one judges, in my opinion, the animal should be capable of working.  Another Violet Yates saying was “a good horse I any colour”.  I am not saying that breeds should carry great variety of colourings, but a small deviation has to e considered versus wrong construction ……………

Jacket textures were really very good, especially in a summer that has been so varied for climate.  I was also pleased that you don’t subject your Aussies to a variety of oils, coat sprays etc.  At the end of the day, my hands were really quite clean.

From a construction angle, I found one hock which sub-luxated (double jointed) and another that though OK to examine, on moving away gave the little “hop” that suggests patella luxation.

Good luck with the future of your lovely breed!

 Ann Arch.

My thanks for a very good entry, in a spacious venue, which allowed all exhibits to really get moving.  Two super stewards ensured that the day’s proceedings went well, and this was aided in no small measure by the handlers, who accepted all decisions with grace.

Best in Show went to the dog, who encompasses the Breed Standard in no small way. CURDELEON BLUE THE BOY WUNDA had all that I was looking for in a true worker.  Ultra sound, balanced overall, in lovely firm body condition & muscle. Clear eyes and correct feet. He put up a copy book performance which was well applauded. Reserve Best in Show was the Res.CC dog AUSTMANS CALEDONIAN CHAOS . Another who typified a real worker.  Best Opposite Sex was AUSTMANS SALLY CARERRA, a truly admirable bitch, no so long off her litter, so a little lacking in undercarriage! Despite this, her good type, balance & soundness carried her. Best Puppy in Show was AUSTMANS COR BLIMEY at 10months shows great promise for the future. Best Opp.Sex Puppy was AUSTMANS GEE WHIZZ AT TIBORKIE. Best Veteran was the BIS winner.  Bes Opp.Sex Veteran RANPURA BELLBIRD ECHO.

Veteran Dog: 4.

  1. C.B.THE B.WUNDA. Best in Show winner.
  2. RANPURA BILLY BLUE GUM. Close up in many respects. Nicely headed, good forehand. Well bodied and in good jacket. Good quarters. Moved well.
  3. GARREG DDU RED A DARE. .Fraction longer in couplings. Good head & expression. Strong neck, good forehand, sound rear. Easy mover.

Puppy Dog: 3.

  1. AUSTMANS COR BLIMEY. Blue , of good growth and balance. Well proportioned head, good eye & expression. Body coming well with nice brisket and strong loin. Sound rear. Excellent jacket texture. Tail well set & of good length. Moved so well. B.P.I.S.
  2. JAHANGHIR G’DAY MATE. Pleasing red with good head & expression. Nice forehand & feet. Well developed body which need to settle on top line. Good read with pleasing stifle & such good muscle. When settled moved with ease.
  3. ANGELARC GULARA. Blue with pleasing head and expression. Quite good forehand & feet. Body coming on nicely. Tail set and carried rather high. Good coat texture. Easy action.

Junior Dog: 4 (2abs)

  1. RAMELIA MAGNETIC BLUE WITH AUSTMANS. Somewhat lively fellow who took a while to settle. Pleased on head, neck & forehand. Fraction slack on feet at present. Good body & strong loin. Really powerful rear. Tail set & carried a little high, but overall put in a sound performance.
  2. TARILLY ACCESS ALL AREAS AT DRENOSS. Pleasing head, good eye & expression. Would like little more layback of shoulder. Well developed body & nicely held top line. In good jacket.  Could be a little more positive & even on hind action.

Post Grad.Dog. 3,

  1. CURDELEON NED KELLY. Nice for type, construction & overall balance. Good head, eye & expression. Pleasing forehand with clean front & good feet. Well formed body with strong loin. Strong stifles and hock & so well muscled.  Moved soundly & well with good tail carriage.
  2. AUSTMANS DANCES WITH DINGOS AT JAHANCHIR. Pleasing head, eye & expression. Good front & feet. Mature body. Well formed rear. In nice jacket. Easy mover, but hind action could be a little strong at the hock.
  3. DRENOSS CALL ME BOND AT HEELERHILL. Of nice construction overall, but sadly carrying too much body weight. Good head, eye & expression. Clean Front.  Little down on feet. Well sprung body with nice top lines.  With less weight, would give easier rear action.

Limit Dog. 3.

  1. AUSTMANS BLUE PICASSO: Stood out here on his appearance as a working type & so sound. Good head, expressive eye, well placed forehand.  Nice body with good top line. Well formed, sound rear. Tail set and carried

well.  Taking heed of the breed standard, noted he has a solid black patch at   the rear, but construction is the priority on  a working dog and his overall soundness & type can’t be denied.

  1. WARRIGAL BLUE JAMBEROO: Blue of nice type and construction, who didn’t cooperate with his handler! Good head & expression. Clean front, firm body with good loin. Sound rear. Is very sound, but could settle to give more precise action.
  2. AUSTMANS PURE GENIUS AT JAHANGHIR. Rather longer in general proportions. Nice head, proportions & good expression.  Good front, sound read. Moved easily & quite well.

Open Dog. 5 (1 abs)

1.        Res.CC. AUSTMANS CALEDONIA CHAOS. Pleasing type & balance, with called for proportions.  Good head, eye & excellent pigmentation. Strong neck, super shoulder proportions, good feet. Firm body with excellent loin. Sound, well formed rear. Moved with great ease & soundness.

2.        AUSTMANS REAL RIOT. See is sire of class winner, so no doubt as to why they took these placings!  My notes state “close up to winner”. Nicely headed, good forehand. Can come up a little on feet. Very sound rear. Pleasing jacket texture. Moved easily & well.

3.        WARRIGAL BLUE SWAGMAN AT CURDELEON. Good head & expression, strong neck, good forehand and feet. Well developed ribbing. Sound rear with strong stifle. Is just a little longer cast in body. Moved easily & well.

Veteran Bitch 4 (2abs)

  1. RANPURA BELLBIRD ECHO: Blue of good balance, with nicely proportioned head & good expression. Clean forehand. Well formed body with firm top line. Strong rear. Moved easily & well.
  2. CURDELEON RED VELVET: at 12 yrs is in excellent condition. Good on head, eye & pigment. Good quarters, well developed body. Easy & sound mover.

  1. AUSTMANS GEE WHIZZ AT TIBORKIE:  well balanced, with pleasing head & expression. Good neck and forehand & with nice feet. Body forming well with well held top line. Sound rear. Tail set & carried well. Good textured coat. Easy & sound action.
  2. ANGELARC ALLIRA OF AUSTMANS. Pleasing expression. Good strong neck & well placed shoulder. Good feet. Body coming on quite well. Nice rear with pleasing stifle. When settled, moved quite well.
  3. SURLSON SONNET: Nice head proportions, but ears prominent. Good neck & well placed shoulder. Body coming on quite well. As with several others, and season due anytime, moved a little close behind.

Junior Bitch:

Another class where imminent season affected decisions.

  1. GARREG DDU KAMYIARA. Blue of pleasing type & construction. God head & expression. Strong neck into well placed shoulder. Good feet. Body developing well with firm top line. Sound rear with very pleasing muscle. Moved easily & well.
  2. RAMELIA INFRA RED. Nice overall balance & construction. Good head & expression, pleasing neck & forehand.  Firm body,  with good strong loin. Sound rear. Gave good & easy action.

Post Grad Bitch 4(2)

  1. AUSTMANS I’M NO ANGEL AT JAHANGHIR : Good head & expression, nice neck, well placed forehand, good feet. Pleasing body development with strong top line. Rear well formed with good stifle & hock. Nice jacket texture. Moved soundly & well.
  2. TIBORKIE TRULY UNRULY: Good on head & eye. Nice forehand. Body well developed. Strong rear. Moved easily, but could be a little more settled.

Limit Bitch 8(1)

  1. AUSTMANS SALLY CARERRA. Liked her type, balance & soundness. Good Head & expression. Strong neck, well placed shoulder, excellent feet. Nicely formed body with strong loin. Very sound rear. Pleasing jacket texture. Moved so well, with pleasing tail carriage. Obviously, not that long from having a litter, but her overall type & quality could not be ignored. CC.
  2. SURLSON SIZZLING : Another of pleasing construction & soundness. Good head & expression. Strong neck and well placed forehand. Can tighten up a little more on feet. Firm body. Well formed rear, with pleasing stifle & hock. Moved with ease. Res.CC.

  1. AUSTMANS REAL RIOT. 3 reds of nice type & growth.
  2. CURDELEON BLUE THE BOY WUNDA. With progeny of nice type.

BROOD BITCH:

  1. AUSTMANS PURE CHARISMA.
  2. RANPURA BELLBIRD ECHO.
